HP webOS Pivot provide users an entertaining and informative editorial resource for discovering webOS 3.0 applications for the HP TouchPad, which launches July 1.

“Designed to complement the HP webOS App Catalog, Pivot will showcase a broad range of applications — and the developers who create them — by providing customers the freedom to explore based on their interests and lifestyles. It’s just one of the new ways HP is enhancing the webOS Developer Program and investing further in the success of the growing ecosystem,” informs HP.

As much as Android Honeycomb represents an optimization of Android for tablets, webOS 3.0 is a tablet optimization of an OS first devised by Palm for the original Pre smartphone.

“It’s amazing that HP only completed its Palm acquisition about a year ago,” contended Jon Oakes, HP’s director of product marketing for TouchPad, while delivering a demo of HP’s tablet running webOS 3.0 at Pepcom’s Digital Experience press event on Wednesday.
Other specifications include webOS 3.0, “true multitasking,” Touch-to-share, instant-on productivity, a 9.7-inch display (1024 x 768 screen resolution), a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon CPU (!), inbuilt gyroscope, accelerometer, compass and 16GB / 32GB of internal storage space. There’s also a front-facing 1.3 megapixel webcam, support for video calling, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, A-GPS (3G model only), “twice the memory of a Pre 2″ and a set of stereo speakers. Rubenstein claims that this here tablet is “screaming fast,” and the software UI we’re seeing looks downright luscious. There’s a new paneled email application a Growl-like pop-up notification system, support for Skype calling, compatibility with Amazon’s Kindle e-book store, plenty of cal / email integration courtesy of HP Synergy, a slick virtual keyboard, VPN support, wireless printing as well as Google Docs, QuickOffice, Dropbox and Box.net compatibility. One of the killer features that can’t be found on a competing tablet right now is this one’s ability to talk to the Pre 3 — so long as there’s a Touchstone involved, one can have their Pre 3 and TouchPad communicate, even piping over notifications and texts from the phone onto the slate. It’s a brilliant idea, and we’re obviously amped to see just how well it’s implemented.

Four Soft Keyboards
Meanwhile, webOS 3.0′s four virtual keyboards are in four different sizes. You might choose the “extra large” keypad if you’re typing in a lengthy email, or the “extra small” if you want to use most of the screen for looking at photos or videos.

The soft keypads in webOS 3.0 also depart from tradition by offering a number row on top. “This makes it easier to access URLs containing numbers, for example,” illustrated the TouchPad product marketing manager.

The HP exec also showed how webOS will display a status light when the HP TouchPad is connected to its charging dock.

Following the Palm buyout, HP first adopted webOS for use in its printers. Then, in February of this year, HP announced that its own first phones the HP Pre3 and the tiny HP Veer – would run a revamped mobile OS called webOS 2.2, while the TouchPad would be outfitted with the tablet-oriented webOS 3.0.

HP‘s new OS for the tablet also uses the same gestures, such as webOS-specific swipes, as previous editions of the OS. This will surely come as welcome news to users of Palm Pre phones, but it will likely pose a bit of a learning curve to those unfamiliar with WebOS gestures.

Fearless Games was formed several months ago by former LucasArts team members Haden Blackman and Cedrick Collomb. HP also revealed that recently formed game developer Feerless Games will be making a game title for the TouchPad and its WebOS operating system.
